Chiudo, per un circa settimana, questo weblog. Infatti, a mio modesto parere, per scrivere bisogna prima pensare e, i blogs spesso ti tolgono lo spazio per pensare.

(Hint for the person/CEO/BizDeveloper etc. who is constantly looking for "DigitalVision 2003 revenues", ""Image source" 2003 revenues" or "Index stock imagery 2003 revenues" and other good stuff-- Google hits are a tricky thing, especially with your really nice -- and static -- IP! So, no one has to work for Pixlogic, the company ("Visual Search") with Venture Capital from the CIA, just to know who you are...).

Mark Getty Steps Back From A Full-time Role At Getty Images

The Times/Nic Hopkins in "Getty Images has $400m for a bigger picture":

Mr Getty recently stepped back from a full-time role at Getty Images to focus on other tasks, which include helping to manage his family’s investment portfolio and establishing a fledgeling media investment firm, Sutton Place Managers.
[..]
The company’s co-founders, Mark Getty and Jonathan Klein, want to bulk up the company’s presence in markets such as Germany, Italy and Spain through acquisitions and partnerships.
[..]
“We bought 40 companies in quick succession and we had to turn around and consolidate ourselves. If we had bought another 40 companies in the next five years it would have been a much more difficult process,” Mr Getty said.
[..]
“In terms of growth there’s much lower-hanging fruit in parts of Europe, and we will either be acquiring or finding partners there. It will happen soon, and Germany will be first for obvious reasons — we opened in Sydney ahead of the Olympics.”
[..]
Mr Klein said that Getty Images, which sells most of its images to commercial clients such as advertising agencies, was “underdone in editorial images” and was hoping to increase its 10 per cent share of the estimated $1 billion global editorial images market.

In the follow-up discussion to "Should we create a new online FashionMode Mag?" some others readers gathered a lot of useful links to the websites of well-known and -- more important -- of new but yet less know fashion photography magazine sites; difficult to get them elsewhere all in one place:

The Way Our Generation Does It: Poll For A New Online Virtual Magazine "FashionMode"

At FashionMode someone recently proposed (after a big Philippika and "J'Accuse...!") to create a FashionMode Magazine:

Enter your vote today! A new poll has been created for the FashionMode group:
Could FashionMode become an online Virtual Magazine as suggested here by Timothy Keen and
would you be interested by such an offering?
o Yes
o No
o Undecided
To vote, please visit the following web page:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FashionMode/surveys?id=11831769

This would become "not a commercial driven mag but an exposure mag". Read below the full Philippika (actually two) from Timothy:

A story from the Kerala News (for those not familiar with the geography: Kerala is a state in the southwest of India):

Industry Minister P K Kunhalikutty said in the Assembly on Thursday that a few companies and individuals had abandoned their plans to set up IT companies in the State solely because the Government could not give them an assurance on a strike-free environment.
[..]
Kunhalikutty said several major companies like Infosys, Wipro, Alamy Images India, Ernst and Young Middle East Technologies and Alliance Cornhill were pressing the Government to provide them an industry-friendly atmosphere in which they could function round-the-clock on seven days.(Link)

National Football League Photo Library, WireImage, Getty Images: A Follow Up

Football

Update to "Photographers and N.F.L. Collide Over Licensing Plan for Archives" (June 18)

At EP someone recently asked: "Anyone know of any lists where the transfer of the NFL Photos collection to WireImage is being discussed?" There had been -- just because of the NYT contract issue -- in the past a malicious response (bottom of page) from another EP contributor:

The article on the controversy surrounding on the ongoing contract dispute between the National Football League and its contributing photographers is especially interesting considering the Times' failure to report on the controversy surrounding the contract dispute between the New York Times and its freelance photographers over the Times' recent contract offer. When will we see that story covered in their newspaper?

Someone responded now: "Sportsshooter.com has had some threads on this". Indeed, there is a new (July 19) article from Paul Spinelli (the former NFL Director of Photographic Services in LA) titled "NFL Photo Library: An insider's perspective" who discusses "accusations of mismanagement of the archive and failure to respond to the advent of the digital age".

However, the issue is solved: Getty is out and WireImage was lucky. PDN has the complete story "WireImage Scores NFL Photo Archive; Photogs Get Buyout Package" (Jay DeFoore):

The National Football League has reached an agreement with photographers to dismantle the NFL Photo Library...The photographers own the copyright to their images and will retain copyright under the current deal.[...]
But enough of the NFL's past and current contributors so opposed Getty's involvement that they successfully steered the deal towards WireImage...Lewis...a photographer...says the deal signals that company's "great victory over Getty...this will be the first time [Getty has] lost out on an exclusive...this could be a precedent-setter".

Get Drunk, Punk: How To Attract Customers In The Picture Business

p15copy
[© Southampton University Rugby Football Club, The Legendary Christmas Social 2003 Part 2]

Picturehouse 2004 (1; 2) in NYC this year sounds like a meeting of the Alcoholics Anonymous:

Beer and wine will be flowing...Take advantage of this unique opportunity to see...all under one roof...It’s informal and it’s cool...beverages will be available throughout the day.

Reminds you of something? "The Tiki Bar", "great tasting drinks", "wines and cognac pouring freely throughout the evening", "tasty hors d'oeuvres and beverages"...sounds like "Big Spenders are back: So where does this all leave the Stock Photography Market?"

Getty Images´Financial Report For Q II 2004: "The de facto home page for creative and publishing professionals"

Quite impressive. Here are the key numbers:

• Revenue increased 17.7 percent over the second quarter of 2003
• Operating income grew 67.6 percent over the prior year to $39.8 million, or a margin of 26.5 percent of revenue
• Earnings per diluted share increased 78.3 percent over the year-ago period to $0.41

"For the third quarter of 2004, the company expects to report revenue in the range of $152 million to $155 million and earnings per diluted share of $0.40 to $0.42.
The company is raising guidance for 2004 and expects revenue in the range of $605 million to $615 million and earnings per diluted share of $1.60 to $1.70."

More here (including a link to the full report). See also Seattle.bizjournals.com and BusinessWire.

Getty has also updated (or we missed this in the past) the "Corporate Presentation" and recently acquired for $20 million Image.net, a UK-based distribution service for publicity and marketing materials.

Any news from Corbis?
