Micropayment Stock Photo Portal StockXpert Grows About 10,000 Images A Week

JupiterMedia purchased in January 2006 a 49.7% equity investment in Budapest, Hungary, based HAAP Media Ltd., which operates the stock photo sites Stock.xchng and Stockxpert.com. While the images of Stock.xchng (over 216.000 photos by more than 15.000 photographers) are truly free, Stockxpert offers micropayment stock stock images for as low as $1 and works with credit packages.

JupiterMedia announced today that Stockxpert, launched on Sept. 11, 2005, showcases currently over 120,000 images for sale, adds 10,000 additional images weekly and introduced after Worldpay and Ikobo the PayPal service for financial transactions. Granted that the number of images added weekly won´t change (which it presumably will do, i.e. increasing), Stockxpert´s image database might grow to at least about 420,000 images by the end of this year. Some numbers from the competitors:

Getty Images announced in early December 2005 plans of CFO Liz Huebner to retire during the first half of 2006. Peter Appert/Goldman Sachs asked Liz Huebner during the last Conference Call of Getty Images in April: "Liz, have you reconsidered on the retirement question?"

She responded: "No, I have not reconsidered, but I think it’s safe to say that the search obviously is well under way. We’re pleased with how it’s going and I don’t know when we’ll have somebody named".

Yet it has the breadth of material, the unwavering welcome to the bizarre and staggeringly obscure that invigorates the collection. [...]

  • The Rise of Crowdsourcing:
At first, the stock industry aligned itself against iStockphoto and other so-called microstock agencies like ShutterStock and Dreamstime. Then, in February, Getty Images, the largest agency by far with more than 30 percent of the global market, purchased iStockphoto for $50 million. “If someone’s going to cannibalize your business, better it be one of your other businesses,” says Getty CEO Jonathan Klein. iStockphoto’s revenue is growing by about 14 percent a month and the service is on track to license about 10 million images in 2006 – several times what Getty’s more expensive stock agencies will sell.
