Enough Monkey Business! Stock Artists Alliance Says "Stop It" To The Editorial Photographers UK

Monkeybusiness

... or was it the other way round?

Either way, after the verbal attacks of Editorial Photographers UK in "The Turkeys Vote For Christmas" as well as in "The 2006 EPUK Golden Sureshot Awards" on the decision of the Stock Artists Alliance to expand the mission of the association, Betsy Reid, SAA´s Executive Director, has written a serious response to explain her view:

Sion Touhig On Copyright, Photographers´ Race To The Bottom, Media Corporations And Audience Stolen Content

Published on The Register´s website yesterday, photojournalist Sion Touhig (1999 News Photographer of the Year and featured in Life/Time Magazine's "Pictures of the Year" for four years) is out with a three-page article on "How the anti-copyright lobby makes big business richer", followed later by a discussion on his blog.

Sion´s basic reasoning is that:

  • Citizen Journalism - one trend which would appear to suggest more "democracy" in the media - but actually doesn't - is a "smokescreen for grabbing content" (Sion´s blog) and "should be more accurately termed Audience Stolen Content"
  • "Copyright is already dead"
  • "Weakening investigative journalism has far more profound implications for democracy" (quoting the NY Review of Books)

EPUK Awards For The 12 Top 2006 Flops

They just can´t stop themselves. While others announce partly wrong predictions for the year 2007, EPUK, the collective of Editorial Photographers in the UK and Ireland, is just out with a fresh version of The 2006 EPUK Golden Sureshot Awards, also written with all the sarcasm and irony like in the very recent article "The Turkeys Vote For Christmas", which makes the piece once again fun to read.

The Year In Review: Most Charming, Most Weird Image Collection Of 2006

Abouttheimages_1 As the year is running out, it´s time to Iean back. I was asked to write about Tops and Flops 2006 in the editorial and stock photo industry, covering software providers, micropayment sites, the big stockhouses, unknown facts and more or less glorious sacrifices on the altar of the picture trading industry.

Not like earlier this year in The 23 Best, But Still Unwritten Stock Photo Industry Headlines For 2006 with irony and sympathy, but rather with facts and numbers. However, after the surprising feedback to the unwritten headlines the only person who would really benefit from this in terms of money would be my attorney, so I´ll skip this one for now.

More Christmas Riots: Editorial Photographers UK Grill The Stock Artists Alliance

Turkey Does anyone remember The International Stock Imagery Association (ISIA), founded little over a year ago and firstly mentioned here, with a lot of sympathy then?

Does anyone recall the destiny of this association?

Lost focus. Got grilled.
