“American Gangster,” nominated for Best Art Direction and Best Supporting Actress, tells the true juggernaut success story of a cult hero from the streets of 1970s Harlem. To put the film into historical context and to capture the mood of the Vietnam era, BBC Motion Gallery provided 10 minutes of news footage from the CBS News Archive for use as playback in television monitors and in montage sequences appearing in the film.
Oscar-nominated “Charlie Wilson’s War,” licensed more than 10 minutes of footage from the BBC Motion Gallery’s CBS News Archives, featuring CBS coverage of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan - including footage of Dan Rather embedded with Afghan rebel troops during the conflict.
The Sony Pictures release, “Across the Universe,” directed by Julie Taymore, licensed BBC Motion Gallery footage of the Vietnam War and Martin Luther King’s assassination for use as background in select sequences.
“I’m Not There,” the Todd Haynes-directed biopic nominated for Best Supporting Actress for Cate Blanchett’s performance as Bob Dylan, used BBC Motion Gallery clips of wildlife and archival footage.
For Best Documentary Feature nominee “Sicko,” filmmaker Michael Moore used a significant amount of archival footage from BBC Motion Gallery, some dating back to the 1950s, to help paint a picture of the complicated and oftentimes messy health care system under control of the private sector.
Also nominated for Best Documentary Feature, “Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience” from director Richard Robbins showcases the experiences of Iraq War veterans as seen through their writings.
