Picture Nation: Child picture policy encourages uploads

Picturenation Stoke-on-Trent, UK, Mar. 03, 2008. Obtaining a steady stream of model released images of children going about their daily activities in a natural setting isn´t easy.

The relatively new UK based image library www.picturenation.co.uk has its own Child Picture Policy designed to reassure, and to encourage its growing community of amateur, hobby and professional photographers to send in their photos of their children and their friends´ children. The Policy is proving a success and members regularly send in their family and friends’ images for royalty-free sale through picturenation.

"I´m a parent myself", says picturenation director Jane-Louise Green, "and when I was a producer for the BBC websites I needed a steady stream of new, generic images of children for all sorts of stories and features. The more spontaneous looking the better. I want people to upload their good images of their children to our site, but totally understand the need to reassure people of how their children’s pictures will be used through a royalty-free model".

Picturenation photographers say the Child Picture Policy certainly helps get model released child images. "I´m very lucky to have 3 happy modelling children", says Lisa Butler, who sells through picturenation. "They end up in lots of my pictures. Other models are kind friends, family or colleagues. I explain the Picturenation website to them, in particular their Child Picture Policy, and they have so far seemed happy with signing the form".

Even though the buyers of the images are recorded, picturenation flags up the fact that it tracks who buys its child pictures. If someone selects a child image for purchase, they immediately get an e-mail requesting a reason for the purchase and where the image is to be used. Once happy with the details given, the buyer is allowed to download the image.

"So far it hasn’t deterred buyers from choosing our images", says Jane, "and it seems to give a confidence to buyers as well as sellers that they are using a responsible and diligent image library".

Picturenation is now also Approved Retailers and Providers to Curriculum Online – with images covering all school key subjects. Schools can use government allocated e-Learning Credits to buy picturenation images for the classroom.
