George Simhoni, a Masterfile contributing artist, wins Applied Arts Photography & Illustration award

George_simhoni_masterfile Düsseldorf/Toronto, July 2008: When photographer George Simhoni was working with a client in Alberta, he took a day off to relax and go skiing at Lake Louise. At the top of a mountain, he saw a post with a number of roughly-made signs on it and got out his camera. “I saw it and thought it was special,” he explains, and it turns out his industry agrees.

George’s photo, which is available at masterfile.com, won a prestigious prize in the 17th annual Applied Arts Photography and Illustration Awards and was published in the Photography and Illustration Annual.

Smithsonian Magazine Announces 5th Annual Photo Contest Winners

Smithsonian__magazine_photo_contest Washington, D.C., July 07, 2008. From a birth celebration in India to the winning run on a baseball diamond in California, the top entries from the 5th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest reflect decidedly international points of view, with a wide variety of content and style.

In the July issue of Smithsonian magazine and on the Web at Smithsonian.com, six photographs in five categories were chosen by Smithsonian editors, with one Readers’ Choice selected by Smithsonian.com visitors, readers and photography enthusiasts.

Smithsonian received nearly 7,000 entries in six categories: The Natural World, People, Travel, Americana, Altered Images and Readers’ Choice.

Recreational photographers from 50 states and 82 countries submitted their work and the winners reflect the geographical and aesthetic diversity of the contest as a whole.

Photolibrary campaign from TBWA\TEQUILA\ Singapore goes from strength to strength

London, UK, May 26/June 09, 2008. TBWA\TEQUILA\ Singapore has only had the regional Photolibrary account since late ‘07. But the work has already significantly raised the client’s profile in the ad industry.

Photolibrary is a leading global stock image provider to the Advertising, Design and Publishing Community.  The brief from the client was that they wanted their advertising to work harder for them. The first campaign of 3 print ads was launched Dec 07 to promote royalty-free images. The campaign ran across Asia, Australia and the United States in both the regional trade press and local publications.

Press Association photographer Andrew Milligan picks up prestigious Scottish Photography Awards

Andrew_milligan_pa__photos London, UK, Mar. 28, 2008. Press Association photographer, Andrew Milligan has won two categories in the prestigious First ScotRail Press Photography Awards. He picked up the News Picture of the Year and Open category. Andrew, who is based in Central Scotland, impressed judges with his image of schoolgirl Vicki Hamilton´s father being restrained as Peter Tobin left court after being charged with her murder. His amusing shot of a young Highland cow in the snow won the Open category.

Andrew Milligan is one of three Press Association photographers based in Scotland, all of whom have either won or been nominated at the First ScotRail Press Photography Awards in the last two years.

Gruner + Jahr Photo Award 2008

Gruner_jahr_photo_award Hamburg, Mar. 20, 2008. The Gruner + Jahr (G+J) photo award is a prize for professional new talent and young professional photographers up to the age of 35 years. Previously unpublished work from 2007 and 2008 may be submitted through March 31, 2008.

The award is aimed at aspiring professionals who are either still in training, have finished their education, or have already undertaken their first commissions for magazines and advertising agencies.

PA photographer Gareth Copley named Sports Photographer of the Year

Gareth_copley_pa_photos London, UK, Mar. 18, 2008. Press Association photographer, Gareth Copley won acclaim as Sports Photographer of the Year at the British Sports Journalism Awards last night. He also won the Specialist Sports Portfolio prize. The awards were presented in front of a record audience of over 400 journalists, at the event run by the Sports Journalists’ Association, which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year.

Delighted with the award, Gareth said: “It’s the first time I’ve entered the awards and I wasn’t expecting to win. I entered a selection of cricket photos from my time covering the Sri Lanka tour, the Ashes and home games this year."
